South Texas 2011 Deer Season
The year 2011 set all new records in the weather books for the State of Texas. Texas recorded the greatest number of days over 100 degrees ever. Making the high temperatures even worse was the lack of rainfall. The entire state was in a historical drought. Many large lakes went dry or almost dry. Needless to say, these conditions took a terrible toll on the state's wildlife. It was particulary evident in the whitetail deer herd where the antler size and body weights were down 20 to 25 percent. Very few fawns were seen by hunters. I was able to make 2 trips to my brother's deer lease in deep South Texas this year. On one of these trips, I was able to take my oldest grandson along. He is 13 and this was his first time ever to participate in the activities of a real deer camp. We did manage to see some wildlife and were able to take a few photos as a result. It was slim pickings as a whole. I have posted a few photos taken on the 2 trips. No trip is ever a bad trip to a hunting camp, and these trips, along with the comradery of all in camp, especially your grandson, will be remembered forever.
